Ask AI about an error without pasting credentials or private logs
Create a minimal reproducible description, replace secrets consistently and request diagnosis before accepting a suggested command.
In brief
An error report needs the symptom, environment and relevant context, not your whole log or project. Remove credentials and unrelated personal information before asking an AI service to help.
A minimal example can improve the diagnosis while reducing the data you expose.
Keep the useful evidence
Include the short error text and surrounding non-sensitive lines, what you expected and what happened. State recent relevant changes. A broad screenshot of every open window adds exposure without necessarily helping. Use a sanitized copy, not your only original log.
Redact consistently
Replace the same sensitive value with the same descriptive marker such as REDACTED_TOKEN. Keep the role clear without inventing a usable credential. Inspect URLs, headers and environment dumps, and remove names or private structure not needed to explain the issue.
Review the proposed fix
Prefer a diagnostic that reads state before one that deletes files or changes services. Verify the command and target path yourself. If the answer claims a test passed, ask what evidence exists; an AI text response is not proof that your local error was reproduced.
Before you act
Redaction must preserve enough structure to explain the problem. A suggested command is unverified advice until you understand its effect and check the relevant documentation.
What to do next
- Record the exact error, platform/version and action that triggered it.
- Remove tokens, passwords, private URLs and unrelated paths from a small reproducible sample.
- Ask for causes and a reversible diagnostic step, then inspect any command before running it.
