Incognito, Guest or a Chrome profile: which should you use?

Choose a temporary session, a guest window or a separate everyday profile. Understand what remains visible and what is not protected on a shared computer.

✓ A Chrome profile is not an operating-system account.✓ Incognito does not make browsing anonymous.✓ Files downloaded during a temporary session can remain.

In brief

Use a separate profile for ongoing work and personal browsing. Use Guest when another person temporarily needs your browser without entering your normal profile. Use Incognito for a temporary session, knowing that it is not an anonymity tool.

These features separate local browsing state in different ways. None turns an untrusted computer into a safe place to enter every password you own.

Prepared from the linked primary documentation. Examples explain a procedure or calculation; they are not a device benchmark or a hands-on product review.

Choose for the person and the duration

A separate profile keeps an ongoing set of settings, bookmarks and account state. It is useful when the same person alternates between work and personal browsing, but it is not a password barrier against someone who controls the computer.

Guest is better suited to another person borrowing your browser briefly. Incognito is a temporary window within your own use. Choose deliberately rather than treating all three as the same privacy switch.

Check account and sync state

Before browsing, inspect the profile icon and signed-in account. Accidentally enabling sync in the wrong profile can mix bookmarks and saved information across devices.

If testing a website issue, a temporary window can show whether your ordinary session state contributes. It is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that the site is safe or that extensions and policies cannot affect it.

Leave the device clean

Close all windows for the temporary session and check where downloaded files went. A PDF or screenshot saved to disk is outside the promise of clearing browsing history on window close.

For sensitive work, use a device and OS account you trust. Do not rely on Incognito to protect against monitoring software or another user with administrative access.

Where to open each option

On desktop Chrome, open the profile icon near the top of the window for Guest or to add another profile. Open the three-dot browser menu and choose New Incognito window for an Incognito session. Guest and profile controls can be unavailable on a managed device.

On Android or iPhone, use New Incognito tab from Chrome’s menu where available. Do not follow a desktop Guest-window instruction when the mobile browser does not offer that feature. Close all Incognito tabs to end that temporary session.

If a friend needs to check a delivery on your laptop, a Guest window avoids using your normal profile. If you want to separate your own work bookmarks every day, create a profile. If you only want to test a website without your existing session, try Incognito. None of those choices justifies signing into a sensitive account on a computer you do not trust.

Before you act

Downloaded files can remain after a temporary window closes. Websites, network operators and managed-device software may still observe relevant activity. A profile is not a separate operating-system user account.

What to do next

  1. Decide whether the separation is temporary or for daily use.
  2. For a guest session on desktop Chrome, open the profile menu and select Guest where available.
  3. For ongoing separation, create a distinct profile and check its account and sync settings.
  4. Before leaving a shared device, close the session and inspect any downloads or saved files.
