Prepare your phone for loss, updates and account recovery
Check the screen lock, device locator, backup and recovery methods while the phone is still in your hands.
In brief
Phone security is not only installing an app. A usable screen lock, supported updates and a tested loss-and-recovery plan protect the account and data paths you actually depend on.
Preparing now lets you find out whether a locator or backup is enabled before the phone disappears.
Protect the locked screen
Choose a PIN or password that is not obvious and keep biometric fallback understood. Check lock-screen previews for codes and private messages. A hidden notification preview does not replace account MFA, but it reduces casual access to information on a lost device.
Prepare the loss route
Check the platform’s official locate/lock service and sign-in requirements from another trusted device. Keep recovery codes or another supported method outside the phone. Know the consequences of remote erasure before using it; do not follow a “found phone” text asking you to remove the device from your account.
Maintain supported software and copies
Review the manufacturer’s update support, official app updates and backup status. Open a representative backed-up item from its destination where possible. Avoid sideloading an unknown recovery or security tool because an advert claims your phone is infected.
Before you act
Remote location or erasure depends on device and account conditions. A locator is not guaranteed to find a disconnected phone, and erasure can end some recovery options.
What to do next
- Use a strong supported screen lock and hide sensitive notification content on the locked screen.
- Update the OS and apps through official routes and review unused apps.
- Verify the official device locator and backup from a trusted second device, keeping account recovery independent.
