Check WhatsApp linked devices and log out an unfamiliar session

Review WhatsApp Web and other linked devices from your main phone, remove access you do not recognize, and distinguish this from full account recovery.

In brief

If you left WhatsApp open on a shared computer, review Linked devices from your main phone. You can remove a linked session without taking possession of that computer. First identify the entry you intend to remove; a vague device label is not proof by itself that someone read your messages.

This is a practical access check after using a public or borrowed computer. It is also worth doing when an unexpected linked-device notice appears, before assuming that changing an unrelated phone setting will end the session.

Open the list on the phone you control

On Android, use the three-dot menu → Linked devices. On iPhone, open WhatsApp Settings → Linked devices. Read the entries before removing them so you can distinguish your own browser from a computer you borrowed.

For example, if you used a library computer yesterday, remove that session even if the browser was later closed. Closing a browser window and revoking linked access are different actions. You do not need to ask a stranger to reopen the chat for you.

Log out the session you cannot explain

Tap the device entry and choose Log out. Return to the list and confirm that the entry is no longer linked. If you decide to remove several sessions, do it deliberately; legitimate devices will need to be linked again.

Keep any useful security notice privately, without posting phone numbers or chat previews to a public forum. An entry’s label can be approximate, so use the surrounding circumstances rather than treating a name alone as a complete incident report.

Device linking is an approval you should understand

Only approve a linking flow you initiated for a device you control. A QR code presented by a stranger can be a request to connect their device, not a harmless verification picture. Read the in-app action before authenticating.

Two-step verification can add account protection, but it should not be confused with reviewing currently linked sessions. Configure the protection available in your account and keep access to recovery details. No public website needs your WhatsApp registration code to inspect this list.

When logout is not enough

If the primary account has been taken over or you cannot access WhatsApp, follow the official recovery process for that situation. Do not assume that this linked-device checklist will restore a number you no longer control.

If messages were sent in your name, contact affected people through a reliable route and explain the specific incident. Avoid claiming that nobody could have copied anything merely because the linked entry disappeared. The check confirms access removal, not deletion of information already seen.

Before you act

Logging out stops that linked session’s access; it does not erase screenshots or copies someone may already have made. If you no longer control the main account, use WhatsApp’s compromised-account recovery guidance instead.

What to do next

  1. Open Linked devices from WhatsApp on your main phone.
  2. Compare the listed devices with the computers and phones you actually use.
  3. Select an unfamiliar or shared-device entry and choose Log out.
  4. Recheck the list, then review account protection and avoid approving unsolicited device-link requests.
You’ve reached the end. Save this guide for later.Back to top ↑
