Crossplay and cross-progression: check both before buying a second copy
Find out whether friends on different platforms can play together and whether your saves and purchases follow your account.
In brief
Crossplay means players on supported platforms can join the same game session. Cross-progression means progress follows an account across platforms. A game can provide one without the other.
Checking both features before buying prevents paying for a second version that cannot join your friends or use your existing progress.
Ask the right question
“Available on PC and PlayStation” only describes where a game is sold. Look for explicit crossplay support and any required in-game toggle. Friends may need to add each other through the publisher account rather than their console friend lists. Matchmaking or child-account restrictions can also affect invites.
Link accounts without creating a duplicate identity
For Epic’s supported games, progress sharing requires the platform accounts to be linked to the intended active Epic account. Sign in to that existing account and inspect connected accounts before changing anything. A new account with a similar display name is not the account containing your purchases.
Check progress and money separately
Confirm the character or save, purchased content and currency rules independently. For example, Fortnite’s V-Bucks have platform-specific conditions even when items and progress are shared. Do not unlink an account to troubleshoot a missing balance until you understand the publisher’s relinking restrictions.
Before you act
Platform combinations, game editions, paid currency and account-linking rules differ by title. Support for PC and one console does not prove support for every console.
What to do next
- List the exact game, editions and platforms each player uses.
- Read the publisher’s crossplay and account-linking support pages for those combinations.
- Link the correct accounts and test a party invitation before buying add-ons or unlinking anything.
