Steam Families: share eligible games without sharing your account

Understand household eligibility, simultaneous play and parental controls before setting up Steam Families.

✓ Up to six close household members under the current policy.✓ A shared library does not mean unlimited simultaneous copies.

In brief

Steam Families lets eligible members of a household access shareable games while keeping separate accounts and saves. It is not an invitation to give another person your password or a way to create extra copies of one game.

A two-copy example resolves the common confusion: two family members can play the same title at once only when the family has enough eligible copies for them.

Separate accounts keep progress separate

Each member should use their own login. Shared games can have individual saves and achievements; sharing does not merge profiles. If two people want the same game at the same time and only one eligible copy exists, a second copy is needed. Different games can be played from the family library concurrently.

Use child roles for actual parental controls

An adult can manage a child account’s permitted games, playtime and purchase requests. Configure these controls together rather than relying only on a game’s store age label. Review whether the title uses an additional publisher account or online service that has its own restrictions.

Check exclusions before buying for the family

Confirm that the title is available for sharing and that the relevant copy includes the required DLC. Publisher exclusions and external account requirements can prevent sharing. Do not leave a working family just to test another invitation: waiting periods can make reversing that decision difficult.

Before you act

Some games cannot be shared. Household checks, country restrictions and waiting periods can affect joining or replacing members; inspect the current Family management screen before leaving a family.

What to do next

  1. Open account details and Family management, or the Family section in Steam settings.
  2. Create a family and invite eligible household accounts, choosing adult or child roles accurately.
  3. Open a shared title, check the available copy and test it using each member’s own account.
