Verify Steam game files without treating it as a save backup
Repair downloaded game files through Steam, protect modified files first and understand what verification does not cover.
In brief
Steam’s file verification compares installed game files with the expected download and repairs mismatches. It can help after an interrupted update, but it is not a backup or a universal crash fix.
Protecting mods and custom edits first prevents a repair from silently replacing something you meant to keep.
Choose it for the right symptom
It is a reasonable step when a game reports missing files or a download was interrupted. Record the error first. If every game loses connection or Windows cannot read the drive, investigate that wider failure instead of verifying one title repeatedly.
Protect deliberate changes
A mod replacing original assets may be overwritten by repair. Record its version and installation instructions, and save your game data independently. Use the launcher’s verification action rather than deleting folders to force a full download. Avoid running several disk-heavy repairs simultaneously.
Open the game’s Properties from your Library, choose Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files. Let verification and any replacement download finish before the next test.
Judge the outcome by the original failure
After completion, launch through Steam and repeat the action that failed. If the issue remains, keep the error and next investigate game requirements, launcher accounts or a documented issue. A successful file check proves that particular check completed; it does not prove the whole system is healthy.
If verification finishes but the same error remains, use the follow-up diagnosis rather than repeating the download. Steam verification finished but the game still crashes: what next? · Back up PC game saves and prove you can restore them
Before you act
Verification does not promise to recover saves, fix an account licence or repair a failing drive. Some local configuration files are expected to differ.
What to do next
- Close the game and back up saves plus any intentionally modified installation files.
- Open Library → game Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Allow the check and required download to finish, then reproduce the original problem once.
