Firefox Strict tracking protection: enable and test it
Turn on Strict protection, check the shield report and fix a broken site with a site-specific exception rather than disabling protection everywhere.
In brief
In Firefox desktop, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Enhanced Tracking Protection and choose Strict. Reload open tabs where prompted, then test the sites you depend on for sign-in, payments or embedded media.
Stricter blocking can stop tracking-related content that a site also uses for a feature. A controlled exception helps distinguish that compatibility problem from a general browser failure.
This guide uses the linked product documentation. Worked scenarios explain how to check your own result; they are not measurements of your device.
Make the change and establish a baseline
Note the setting you currently use, choose Strict and reload tabs if Firefox requests it. Test a small set of sites whose behaviour you recognise: a sign-in page, a video and a form. Without a before-and-after check, a separate outage can be mistaken for a protection problem.
Do not judge the setting by how many items the shield lists. The purpose is useful browsing with less tracking, not reaching a particular counter.
If one site stops working
Click the shield beside that site’s address and inspect the report. Temporarily turn protection off for that site, reload and retry the same feature. If it now works, you have identified a compatibility lead; if it still fails, restore protection and check another cause.
For a sign-in or payment problem, do not repeatedly send the form to test it. Use a low-risk part of the flow, and check that the domain is correct before deciding to allow more third-party activity.
Keep exceptions narrow
Review the exception list in Privacy & Security when you no longer need a site or after it changes. A workaround that once helped can remain long after the broken feature is repaired.
Protection works alongside updates, careful downloads and account security. It does not guarantee that a permitted site is honest or that a download is safe.
A video stops loading after Strict is enabled
First reload the page and try the same video. Open the shield beside the address and inspect the site’s protection controls. If you temporarily turn Enhanced Tracking Protection off for that site, Firefox reloads it. Try the same video again, without changing cookies or extensions at the same time.
If the video still fails, turn protection back on: the comparison did not explain the problem. If it works only with protection off, decide whether that exception is justified for this site. You can report the broken site from Firefox’s shield/menu controls. Restore protection after the test if you do not need the exception.
An embedded player can involve another company’s scripts. Allowing it for one site is not a recommendation to disable privacy protection everywhere. A working video also says nothing about whether a download offered on the page is trustworthy.

Before you act
Tracking protection is not a malware scanner or complete anonymity. A temporary site exception allows more activity on that site, so keep only exceptions you understand.
What to do next
- Open Firefox Settings > Privacy & Security > Enhanced Tracking Protection. Open Advanced settings if offered, then choose Strict.
- Reload affected tabs and test one familiar site feature.
- Use the shield beside the address bar to review blocking and temporarily compare that site with protection off.
- Restore protection if the test did not explain the problem; review saved exceptions periodically.
