Save a webpage as PDF without missing the useful content

Use Chrome print preview, choose Save as PDF and inspect page ranges, layout and private details before sharing the exported file.

✓ Print layout can differ from the webpage.✓ Interactive content does not remain interactive in a normal PDF export.✓ Account and page details may appear in the saved file.

In brief

On desktop Chrome, open the page, press Ctrl+P and choose Save as PDF as the destination where available. Use preview to check what will be included before saving; a web page and its printed layout can differ substantially.

A saved PDF can omit content that was not loaded or include account details and extra navigation. The useful check is the exported file itself, not just whether the Save button worked.

This guide uses the linked product documentation. Worked scenarios explain how to check your own result; they are not measurements of your device.

Prepare the page you actually want

Open any needed expandable content and make sure the relevant table or text has loaded. A page that loads more items while scrolling may not include those items in print until they have been fetched.

If the publisher provides a print view or an authorised PDF download, compare that option. It may offer cleaner pagination than exporting the normal page.

Read the preview before saving

Choose the PDF destination in Chrome’s print dialog. Limit the page range if you only need a few pages, and try landscape for a wide table. Compare the preview after changing scale; making everything tiny is not a good fix for clipped columns.

Inspect headers and footers for URLs, dates or titles you do not want on every page. Check background graphics when colour carries meaning, but do not depend on background colour alone to understand a chart.

Inspect the saved PDF as a separate document

Open the result and check the important rows, labels and final page. If the document is unexpectedly large, see whether large images or many unwanted pages were included rather than renaming the file to pretend it is smaller.

Before sending an account page, look for names, balances, identifiers or private messages. Exporting a page locally is not a privacy scrub. When a link answers the recipient’s need, sharing the original page can be clearer and avoids distributing an unnecessary copy.

Desktop and Android: get to the PDF preview

On Windows or Linux, use Ctrl+P; on a Mac, use Command+P. In desktop Chrome, choose Save as PDF in Destination where offered. On Android, open Chrome’s menu, choose Share, then Print. The Android print dialog may offer Save as PDF in the printer selector; availability and labels depend on the device. This is not the same menu as Chrome on an iPhone.

For a timetable whose right-hand column is cut off, change orientation to landscape and check the preview. If necessary, reduce scale enough to include that column without making it unreadable. Select only the preview pages needed. Page ranges refer to the print preview, not headings or page numbers written in the webpage.

Open the saved file and search for a distinctive phrase from the last required row. Check the first and last selected pages visually too. If the text search fails, inspect whether the source was an image or whether content was omitted; a successful save alone does not prove either. PDF extraction/reordering can rearrange existing pages, but it cannot recover a column that never reached the saved PDF.

Tools for this task

Before you act

Video, interactive controls and changing page data are not preserved as functioning web features. A PDF copy also does not give you permission to republish protected content.

What to do next

  1. Load the part of the page you need, then open Print with Ctrl+P.
  2. Select Save as PDF and inspect preview, page range, orientation and margins.
  3. Check whether headers, footers or background settings add or remove needed information.
  4. Save the PDF, open it and inspect the first and last page and any important table.
  5. Remove private details before sharing, and share a source link when a full copy is unnecessary.
