Remove a photo’s location before sharing it from iPhone

Review a photo’s location, turn it off for a share, and check the exported copy. Understand what removing GPS data cannot hide in the picture.

In brief

In iPhone Photos, open the share sheet, choose Options and turn off Location when that option is available. This controls the location sent with that share. It is separate from removing a stored location or preventing the Camera app from collecting it in future.

A picture can reveal where it was taken through its metadata as well as visible details. Choose the control that matches the copy you intend to send.

Decide which location information you want to change

There are three different jobs: inspect a photo, omit its location from one outgoing share, or stop future photos recording a location. A privacy setting for tomorrow’s camera use does not retroactively clean yesterday’s pictures. Likewise, sending one location-free copy does not remove earlier copies from other devices.

Review, then share without location

In Photos, open the image and swipe up or tap the information button to inspect its details. To share it without location, tap Share, open Options and turn off Location. Apple describes a “Location Not Included” indication above Options. Check the share choices again when sending a different selection.

If you want to change the stored location itself, follow the photo’s Adjust Location control and choose No Location where offered. For future captures, review Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera. These changes have different scopes, so choose deliberately.

Check the copy that leaves your device

For a low-risk test, use a non-sensitive photo and save or send a copy through the route you intend to use. Inspect the received file’s information if your device exposes it. A missing map in one app is useful feedback, not proof that every kind of metadata was stripped. Do not upload a private photo to a random metadata-checking service just to test it.

Look beyond metadata

Before posting, zoom in on reflections, address labels, vehicle plates and documents in the frame. Ask whether the caption or post timing identifies a place even without GPS. If another person appears in the image, consider their privacy too. For a sensitive original, keeping it private may be safer than relying on an export setting.

Before sharing other files, also check whether the recipient can pass the link on to anyone. Share a Google Drive file without making its link public

Before you act

Removing GPS information does not anonymise a photo. A house number, school badge, landmark, caption or previous shared copy can still reveal a location. Menus vary by iOS version.

What to do next

  1. Open the photo and inspect its information panel for a map or location.
  2. For a one-off share, open Share > Options and turn off Location.
  3. Review the destination and send only the intended copy.
  4. Inspect that copy’s information where possible before wider sharing.
  5. Change Camera location permission separately if you want future photos to stop recording it.
