Choose PS5 storage: an M.2 SSD and USB storage do different jobs
Check Sony’s M.2 requirements, cooling clearance and formatting before buying a drive to expand PS5 storage.
In brief
A compatible internal M.2 SSD can store and run PS5 games. USB extended storage can hold PS5 games, but those games must be copied back to console or compatible M.2 storage to play.
Choose the drive for the job: more immediately playable PS5 space requires a compatible M.2 drive, while an external drive can serve as a storage shelf.
Check the specification, not the label
Sony specifies PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe support and recommends at least 5,500 MB/s sequential reads. Check capacity, form factor and total size including cooling against the linked table. A claim such as “gaming SSD” is not an adequate compatibility specification.
Do not improvise the installation
Match the guide to the console model, turn it off, disconnect power and let it cool. The spacer position and heatsink clearance matter. If you cannot identify the correct mounting position, seek competent help rather than forcing the drive or cover. Expect the console to format the newly installed drive.
Manage games and saves separately
Use Settings → Storage to inspect space; use the game library’s move controls for installations. Your account, licences and save data are separate from the drive’s game files. Before selling or replacing storage, inspect saved-data protection as well as the installation list.
Before you act
The M.2 shape alone does not prove compatibility. Formatting erases the drive, and the heatsink must fit within Sony’s specified dimensions.
What to do next
- Compare the exact drive and heatsink specifications with Sony’s requirements.
- Back up any data on the drive, then follow the installation guide for your PS5 model with power disconnected.
- Use Settings → Storage to move a game and test it before changing the default installation location.
