Free game storage without deleting progress or recording originals
Separate installed games, saves, mods and captures, then remove the largest re-downloadable files through their launcher.
In brief
Game storage is not one disposable folder. Installations, saves, mods and recordings have different recovery paths. Start by measuring the large items, then remove re-downloadable installations using the store client.
This targets the space that matters while protecting small but irreplaceable saves.
Measure before cleaning
In Steam Settings → Storage, sort or inspect installed sizes and destinations. Compare them with recording folders and other launchers. Do not delete an unfamiliar AppData or userdata folder because it looks game-related; identify its role first.
Remove what can be recovered
Uninstall a game you can download again from its launcher. For a large title you still play, use the built-in move operation instead. Review old download installers and duplicate exports after confirming they are not your only offline installation or capture copy.
Leave room for the next update
Patching can need temporary working space beyond the download size. Keep useful headroom on the game drive rather than filling it immediately with another install. If recording consumes the reclaimed space, adjust its retention or recording mode instead of repeatedly deleting games.
Before you act
A launcher uninstall may not remove every mod or local recording, and deleting a folder manually can damage a library’s state. Cloud saves should be confirmed, not assumed.
What to do next
- Inspect Steam Storage and Windows storage usage to identify the largest items.
- Back up saves and important recordings separately.
- Uninstall unused games through their launcher or move them to another drive, then recheck free space.
