Find and export Steam screenshots without losing the originals
Use Steam’s screenshot manager, locate the local file and check privacy before uploading a capture.
In brief
A Steam screenshot can exist locally without being published to your profile. Open the screenshot manager to locate the original file or choose whether to upload it, instead of searching the game installation folder at random.
Keeping the original lets you crop or redact a copy for sharing while preserving the full capture.
Locate the file from Steam
The configured screenshot key appears in Settings → In Game. In the screenshot manager, filter by game and select the capture. Older clients may label the manager Screenshots. Use its local-file action rather than deleting or reorganizing Steam’s userdata directories manually.
Export for editing or an article
Copy selected files to a clearly named folder outside Steam. Keep one untouched original and edit another copy. Check the exported image dimensions before enlarging it: a small capture cannot gain genuine detail through a larger canvas.
Share only what belongs in public
Crop account identifiers, private chat and notifications, and check screenshots from online sessions for other players’ information. Choose the intended profile visibility. A capture uploaded publicly should be treated as publicly accessible even if you later delete your local file.
Before you act
Screenshots can reveal usernames, chat, invite codes and personal notifications. Publishing visibility and spoiler content deserve a check before upload.
What to do next
- Capture with the configured screenshot key, then open View → Recordings & Screenshots in current Steam clients.
- Select the game and screenshot, and use the available local-file or folder action.
- Copy the original elsewhere, redact a sharing copy and choose the upload visibility deliberately.
