In brief

Steam Game Recording can capture continuously in the background or only when started on demand. The first choice is convenient for unexpected moments, but it also needs a deliberate storage and privacy policy.

A short clip is easier to keep and share than an entire evening of recorded play.

Set a budget you can sustain

Choose retention and quality based on the drive’s free space and the clips you actually save. As a calculation example, a 20 Mb/s video stream is about 9 GB per hour before other overhead; this is not a promised Steam file size. Inspect your actual recordings to estimate your setup.

Check the recording scope

Review which audio sources are included. Turn off unwanted microphone or voice-chat capture where the settings allow. Test a short private sample and play it back. If recording adds stutter, compare the same scene with it disabled before blaming the graphics preset.

Export before deleting

Trim the useful interval, export a video file and open it from the export folder. Confirm sound, duration and any personal information. Keep important exports outside the temporary recording location, then remove old sessions through the recording interface rather than deleting unknown Steam data folders.

Before you act

Recording can add load and capture private audio or overlays. Exported clips and temporary background recordings are different files; deleting the source can remove an unexported moment.

What to do next

  1. Open Steam Settings → Game Recording and choose background, on-demand or off.
  2. Review location, retention/length, quality, audio and available space.
  3. Create a clip in View → Recordings & Screenshots, export it and verify the video before cleaning the session.
