PS5 headset has no sound or mic? Check the audio path first
Fix PS5 headset problems by separating output, microphone input and party chat. Check the selected devices before buying a replacement or changing network settings.
In brief
First decide which part is missing: game sound, your microphone, other players’ voices, or all audio. PS5 has separate controls for output and microphone input, and voice chat can be routed through a party rather than the game you are playing.
A working microphone level meter and a silent headset point to different branches. Testing them separately saves you from changing network settings for a headset-volume problem.
Write down exactly what you can hear
Play a familiar game sound and test the microphone meter separately. Use a moderate listening volume. If the television plays sound but the headset does not, start with the headset connection and output selection. If the meter moves but a friend cannot hear you, investigate the chat session rather than immediately replacing the microphone.
A simple note helps: “game sound in headset: yes; microphone meter: yes; party voice: no.” Keep the same headset and controller while checking this so the comparison means something.
Check the selected output, not just the volume
Open Settings → Sound → Audio Output. Choose the intended Output Device and review Output to Headphones. Automatic switching can also change the destination when a device connects, so verify the selected device after reconnecting.
Then check headphone volume and any hardware volume or mute control. If no audio is heard anywhere, inspect the controller’s mute state too. Avoid changing advanced format and amplifier settings until the ordinary output route is clear.

Prove that PS5 receives your voice
In Settings → Sound → Microphone, choose Input Device and use Adjust Microphone Level. Speak normally and watch the input response. Check a headset mute switch as well as the controller’s mute control; an on-screen selection cannot undo a physical mute.
If no input is detected, reconnect the device using its supported method. Where practical, compare with another known-compatible microphone or controller. Do not treat an untested third-party adapter as proof that the console microphone socket has failed.

Party chat, game chat and balance
Use the voice-chat card in the control centre to check whether you are in party chat or game chat. Test with one friend who knows the test is happening. If one chat path works and the other does not, inspect that game’s voice settings and account restrictions.
Once both directions work, adjust the balance between voices and game audio. A balance setting pushed to one end can make the other source hard to hear. Save your final device selections so the next connection change is easier to diagnose; router changes are not the first step for missing local sound.

Before you act
Available options depend on the connected equipment. A wireless headset is not automatically compatible with every console connection method. Check the manufacturer’s supported PS5 connection before attempting resets.
What to do next
- Check the headset’s physical connection, mute controls and supported connection method.
- In Settings → Sound, select the intended audio output and inspect what is sent to headphones.
- Select the correct microphone input and watch its level while speaking.
- Test party and game chat separately, then adjust voice/game balance only after the basic path works.
