Android notifications arrive late: diagnose one app

Check notification permission, silent categories, battery restrictions and network access for the affected app before resetting the whole phone.

Illustration for Android notifications arrive late: diagnose one app
✓ A silent alert and a late message are different problems.✓ Battery-saving settings can affect background delivery.✓ App notification categories may have separate settings.

In brief

First distinguish a hidden notification from delayed delivery. If the message is already inside the app but there was no alert, inspect notification settings. If it only appears after opening the app, background activity, battery saving or connectivity may be involved.

Turning every battery restriction off can waste power without fixing a silent notification channel. Test the affected app and change one setting at a time.

Find out what is actually delayed

Ask for a harmless test message and note when it is sent, when an alert appears and when the message appears inside the app. If the content is already there but the banner is absent, focus on notification presentation, not the network.

Check the lock screen, notification shade and silent-notification area. On supported phones, notification history can show an alert you dismissed. An alert hidden by a category setting is different from data that has not arrived yet.

Inspect that app’s alert settings

Open the app’s Notifications page in Android settings. Check the master permission and the category relevant to the event: messages, calls and promotional alerts can be separate. Make sure the desired category is not set to Silent and review lock-screen visibility.

Check Do Not Disturb schedules and any app-specific notification switches inside the app. If the phone has treated it as unused, review its unused-app or app-pause settings before reinstalling and losing local data.

Test background and connection restrictions

If the message arrives only when you open the app, inspect its battery and background-use options. Temporarily adjust the affected app where supported and repeat the same test; do not exempt every installed app from battery management.

Try one alert on a different connection. If several devices receive the same event late, the app’s service may be the bottleneck. Keep the settings change only when it improves the repeatable test; otherwise restore it and collect the app version, time and connection type for support.

Before you act

Android menus vary by manufacturer and version. Removing a background restriction may increase battery use, and some delays originate on the service’s servers rather than your phone.

What to do next

  1. Check whether the message was present inside the app before you opened it.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > the affected app > Notifications and inspect permission and categories.
  3. Review Do Not Disturb and whether alerts are set to Silent.
  4. Inspect the app’s battery/background settings and test any change on that app only.
  5. Compare one test alert on Wi-Fi and mobile data, then return unnecessary changes to their previous state.
