Free up Windows storage without deleting useful files
Find what fills the drive, review temporary-file categories and configure Storage Sense without accidentally clearing Downloads or needed local copies.
In brief
Open Settings > System > Storage and identify the largest category before deleting anything. Temporary files, installed apps and personal files need different treatment; selecting every cleanup checkbox is not a safe shortcut.
A nearly full drive can prevent an update even when your documents are small. The useful first step is to locate the space, not to install a cleaner that promises a faster PC.
This guide uses the linked product documentation. Worked scenarios explain how to check your own result; they are not measurements of your device.
Locate the space before cleaning it
Compare the Storage categories: Temporary files points to cleanup candidates; Installed apps points to programs; Other may include large folders you should inspect. A large category is a lead, not permission to delete all of it. Open File Explorer > This PC to confirm which drive is low.
If games or videos dominate, clearing a small browser cache will barely affect the problem. Decide whether to uninstall a game through its launcher or move a video you own to another drive. Avoid deleting application folders manually; uninstallers know more about the installed files.
Review the cleanup choices
Open Temporary files in Storage settings. Read the selected categories and their descriptions before choosing Remove files. Keep Downloads out of the selection until you have checked its actual contents. Recycle Bin also deserves a look: recovering an item is much easier before emptying it.
On a PC that has just changed Windows versions, cleanup may offer previous installation files. Removing them can take away a rollback route. Do not trade that option for space unless you understand the consequence and have a working backup.
Make automatic cleanup predictable
Open the Storage Sense configuration rather than switching it on and walking away. Review its schedule and how long it keeps items in the Recycle Bin or Downloads. Use a retention rule that matches how you work; a folder named Downloads is not necessarily disposable.
For cloud-backed files, check which items will become online-only. Keep files needed for a trip available offline and confirm they open with the network disconnected. After cleanup, return to Storage and record the actual available space; do not infer that the whole PC became faster.
Before a trip: keep the file, free the right space
Suppose a cloud-backed course folder is visible in File Explorer but you need it without Wi-Fi. Right-click the required OneDrive files or folder and choose Always keep on this device. Wait until downloading finishes and check a file with the network disconnected. A listed filename is not proof that its contents are available offline.
Storage Sense can make eligible cloud-backed files online-only without deleting the cloud copy. Microsoft exempts files marked Always keep on this device from that cleanup. Review the actual cloud-content setting rather than relying on an assumed default; it can differ by Windows release or policy.
If C: is full but the large game is on D:, moving that game will not free the same space on C:. In Windows 11, Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives helps distinguish drives. Check free space on the affected drive before and after one deliberate cleanup. Do not delete an active application folder to make the number improve.

Before you act
Removing files from Downloads or emptying the Recycle Bin can remove the only copy. Making a cloud file online-only can leave it unavailable without internet. Review those consequences before confirming cleanup.
What to do next
- Open Settings > System > Storage and wait for the category sizes to load.
- Open Temporary files and inspect each selected category; leave Downloads unchecked unless you have reviewed that folder.
- For large apps, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall only apps you recognise.
- Move personal videos or installers you want to keep to a verified second location rather than deleting them blindly.
- Review Storage Sense settings, including the Recycle Bin, Downloads and cloud-content options, before enabling automatic cleanup.
