ChatGPT file upload failed? Check the limit, file and connection
Find out whether a ChatGPT upload failed because of a quota, the file itself or your connection. Use a small test before deleting files or retrying repeatedly.
In brief
Start with the error message. A quota warning calls for a different response from a failed network request or an unreadable document. Retrying the same upload twenty times tells you very little and can add more failed attempts to a rolling limit.
A small, non-sensitive test file can separate an account-wide problem from a problem with one document. That gives you something useful to fix instead of a growing list of settings you changed.
If the message says you reached a limit
Check that you are using the intended account and workspace. If a retry time is shown, wait for it. OpenAI notes that failed attempts can count toward upload limits; repeatedly submitting the same file can make diagnosis harder.
Storage usage is another issue. Review Settings → Storage where available, but do not assume deleting old files resets a rolling upload allowance. Keep your own copies before clearing anything you still need. The current official limits are linked below rather than frozen into a number that may change.

Use a test that changes only one thing
Create a short text file containing a harmless sentence and attach it in a new conversation. If that works and your original PDF does not, inspect the PDF: does it open normally on your device, is it password-protected, and is it mostly scanned images?
For example, a twenty-page scan and a one-page text document are not equivalent inputs just because both end in .pdf. Test a small permitted excerpt you can share. Keep the full original unchanged and make sure the excerpt retains the heading or units needed to understand it.
When the small test fails too
Check the service status, then compare a fresh browser session with the current one. Temporarily test one extension or personal VPN setting at a time if you control it, restoring the previous setting afterwards. On a managed network, give the administrator the actual error instead of bypassing security controls.
If a message names a blocked upload host, preserve that wording. A test that works on another permitted network points toward a network-specific issue; it does not prove the file has changed or that the original account is broken.

Check the answer after the upload works
Ask for an identifiable paragraph, page heading or spreadsheet row before requesting a long summary. Compare the result with the source. If the assistant cannot find a passage you can see, say so and narrow the task rather than accepting a confident reconstruction.
If support is needed, keep a short record: time and time zone, account plan, platform, file type and approximate size, exact message, and which small test passed. Share a redacted screenshot, not the private document itself.
Tools for this task
Before you act
Upload availability and limits depend on the account, workspace and file type. A successfully attached file is not proof that every page, table or scanned word was read correctly. Do not upload confidential material merely to test a connection.
What to do next
- Record the exact message and any retry time before trying again.
- Check the account, file type and current upload documentation; distinguish storage from a rolling quota.
- Try a small harmless file once, then compare one browser or network change at a time.
- When the attachment opens, ask for a specific passage or row and verify it against the original.
