Move a Steam game to another drive without downloading it again
Use Steam’s Storage manager, check destination space and verify the moved game before removing anything manually.
In brief
Steam can move an installed game to another library drive from its Storage manager. Use that built-in move operation instead of cutting the game folder while Steam is downloading or updating it.
This usually avoids transferring the whole game again and keeps Steam aware of the installation location.
Prepare the destination
Use a drive Steam can access consistently; an external drive must be connected when you play. Check free space and the selected library path. Create the destination through Steam’s drive selector rather than inventing a folder and expecting it to be detected automatically.
Let Steam complete the move
Choose the game in Storage and use Move, or the available move option in its Installed Files properties. Keep the drive connected and avoid starting the game during the transfer. If an update is blocking the operation, finish the update or resolve its space requirement first.
Verify before cleaning the old drive
Start the game from the Library, load a known save and check that Steam shows the new installation path. If the drive will be erased, make a separate save backup using the game developer’s location. Re-downloadable game files and irreplaceable progress need different treatment.
Before you act
Moving installation files does not necessarily move saves stored in Documents, AppData or a publisher account. Protect those separately before replacing or formatting a drive.
What to do next
- Finish or pause active updates, then open Steam Settings → Storage.
- Add or select the destination library drive, select the game and choose Move.
- Launch the moved game and check its save before deleting old folders or changing drives.
