How to request a Steam refund without missing the window

Find the purchase, check playtime and submit a Steam refund request with the right payment option and supporting details.

✓ Standard game window: 14 days and under two hours.✓ Steam Support processes the request; the store page does not.

In brief

For a standard game purchase, Steam generally accepts refund requests within 14 days when recorded playtime is under two hours. Start the request through Steam Support rather than a community discussion or an email to the developer.

Checking eligibility before another troubleshooting session can keep you from accidentally adding more playtime while investigating a game that will not run.

Check the purchase and playtime first

Open the game in your Library and note its recorded playtime. Then locate the purchase date in account purchase history. Time spent in a launcher or repeatedly testing a broken game can still be counted; do not treat a failed launch as automatically excluded playtime.

Write a useful request

State the actual reason: for example, the game closes after the loading screen on your system. Include the operating system and the error text if relevant, without pasting account credentials. Choose an available refund destination carefully: Steam Wallet credit and money returned to the original method are different outcomes.

If the purchase is missing or outside the usual window

A key bought from another shop is normally a transaction with that shop, even if activated on Steam. For a Steam purchase outside the standard window, you can still ask Support to review the case; explain the circumstances rather than claiming guaranteed eligibility. Avoid duplicate requests while one is pending.

Before you act

The usual rule has exceptions for purchases such as consumables and certain third-party transactions. Submitting a request is not a promise that it will be approved.

What to do next

  1. Open Steam Help and sign in to the account that bought the game.
  2. Choose Purchases, select the transaction and describe the problem.
  3. Choose the refund option, review the offered destination and submit once. Keep the confirmation.
